Surface Coal

The purpose of this course is to teach the concepts that underpin efficient and effective mine planning for open cut coal mines. From the fundamentals of open pit mining to economic and operational analysis, this course will provide tools and techniques to support effective medium to long-term decision-making, based on managing cost and risk.

Course Content

Systematic mine planning

Undertake a systematic analysis of your mine, understand which parts of the deposit should be included in the plan and why, and develop a better plan with less interruptions by unforeseen changes.

Mine scheduling

Apply systematic, iterative scheduling techniques to help manage the impact of unforeseen change.

Mining economics

Discounted cash flow calculations, basic tools for costing from first principals, application of costing techniques to real-life challenges.

Truck & loader mining systems

Fundamentals of earthmoving using trucks/ shovels/ loaders, productivity calculation, useful application of equipment.

Dragline mining systems

Key elements of draglines and dragline working methods, efficient use of draglines, rehandle & productivity calculation, general planning rules of thumb.

Inpit crusher conveyor & other mining systems

Configuration of mobile crusher & conveyor systems, blasting & cast/ throw blasting, and use of dozers for bulk earthmoving mining.
